What does a cigarette mean?

A cigarette means in French a “small cigar”- from cigare + ette). It is a small roll of finely cut tobacco leaves wrapped in a cylinder of thin paper for smoking. The cigarette is inflamed at one end and allowed to smolder; its smoke is inhaled from the other end, which is held in or to the mouth direction and in some cases a cigarette holder may be used as well. Most modern manufactured cigarettes have filters and include reconstituted tobacco and other additional substances.

Secondhand smoke from cigarettes has been shown to be injurious to bystanders or also called passive smokers, who inhale smoke occasionally. But the result of this “smoking” is not less harmful and negative, as these group of people could have had the same diseases as the original smokers. This unpleasant situation has led to legislation that has banned their smoking in many workplaces and public areas.
